What happens when my mind speaks to my heart?
An article by Ha Nhi Le I remember thinking when I first saw a tightrope walker in a circus how difficult it must be to keep balance. I wished I could do the same with my studies and free time It was the first time I became aware of the value of keeping balance in general. We often have to set a goal to become successful and useful at the same time: to choose between profiting ourselves and benefitting society. With life comes obstacles we must face and without bending our principles we will not be likely to see past them to opportunities. WHY WE NEED A BALANCE With the heart I feel my beliefs, my longings and deepest desires. It pushes me towards my goals and motivates me to do things I love. Although it looks like we can count on our hearts to make the right judgement for us, it’s not always sufficient.. The heart can be easily lured in by illusions; the mind cannot be manipulated so easily. With my mind, the faculty of consciousness and thoughts as an element of my personality enables me to be aware of the world and my life experiences. It would be ideal if these two were in balance. So it is alarming when my mind starts speaking to my heart. It means I may be making a wrong decision. FOLLOWING THE HEART One of our strong inclinations is to follow our heart. As Albert Einstein said: “Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” which means there’s only a restricted path we can take while following our mind and there are just certain things you cannot learn but only imagine and feel. Our imagination and feeling let us dream of the impossible so we can then turn it step by step into reality. How did the human race develop? Because people took leaps of faith and did something that no one had ever done before. J.K.Rowling, the author of the best-selling Harry Potter series was rejected by 12 publishers before being finally able to publish this series of books. She didn’t stop pursuing her dreams even though her mailbox was pilling up with rejection letters. She must’ve thought of giving up at some point. Her will to keep doing what she loved most led her to success. RESISTING EMOTION WITH LOGIC But while I tend to follow my heart when it’s screaming at me, it’s clear we’ll never perfectly be able to balance our life. We can’t always stay on that tightrope of life while there are tomatoes being thrown at our heads. So when my mind, the guardian of my principles, is whispering in my ear, I must push my heart to listen to it carefully and to find a reasonable solution. But is there in fact a completely reasonable solution? Sometimes our hearts just know there’s something more, something that our minds would never be able to see: passion. In this case should I find arguments, convincing my mind that I’m not so wrong in my choice, or should my principles rule? While my heart usually controls the steering wheel of my life, my mind sits in the passenger seat and from time to time grabs control when my heart goes off track. It’s a good maxim: always remember to send your heart on a vacation when it’s acting stupid. Contributed by aspiring young writer Ha Nhi Le.
