James Gault reviews The Budapest Protocol by Adam Lebor

I love books that tackle major political themes, and Lebor’s novel takes a wider view on Nazi racism than is normally the case. While Jews were numerically their overwhelming victims, Hitler’s hatred was targeted on others too, among them the Roma. These gypsies of Asian origin still face discrimination throughout Central and Eastern Europe today, and Lebor weaves their plight into his narrative of the grand Neo-Nazi plan to restore xenophobic and oppressive extreme right wing rule in modern Europe. It’s a theme that’s topical and The Budapest Protocol is a thought-provoking and worrying read.

The importance of the themes, apart, how does it shape up as a page-turning thriller? For me, it does that very well. The characters are engaging and the action brisk. Well worth a read.
