Ted Bun reviews The Marlboro Man: A Moira McElvaney Mystery by Derek Fee I’m a big fan of Derek Fee’s DCI Wilson books. This spin off is well written but just a little soft. Moira McElvaney is on her year sabbatical from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, to spend a year with the new love of her life Brendan in Boston. Life is good but …. she misses life on DCI Wilson’s murder squad. Then a chance to investigate a disappearance of a rather dull accountant is presented by the rich, handsome, interesting best friend of Brendan … Just lacking a little of the ‘bite’ and ‘grittiness’ of the Wilson books, things fall into place rather easily or money, and Frank Shae has lots of it, gets results. Characterisation is a little shallow, by the end of the book I didn’t feel I knew the characters. That said the plot was strong and kept the pages turning! |
